Upcycled chunky jewellery

We still don’t hear much about “upcycling” here in the UK – taking a broken or unwanted item that would probably otherwise end up in landfill and turning it into something better.

In Los Angeles, Jo Russell (the Pop Culture Princess) does this, making one-off pieces of jewellery and other accessories from items such as DVDs and CDs (+ their inserts), vintage beads, champagne corks, textiles and semi-precious stones.

If you fancy a bit of eco-friendly bling, here’s one of Jo’s latest creations, a ring made from a champagne cork (Veuve Cliquot to be exact) plus pink and purple rhinestones passed on by a friend and all varnished then re-varnished and mounted onto an adjustable ring. (Jo does use new or “de-stashed” findings, cord or chain as needed.)

I really enjoyed Jo’s blog, which gives an insight into her efforts to succeed as a jewellery maker. The last entry’s called 70 Things to Do when Your Giddy-Up is Giddy-Gone – an exhaustive list of suggestions for when you feel totally used up. Everyone I could think of I eventually found on there but if you’ve got number 71 I’m sure Jo would love to hear from you.

You can also read more about her jewellery on her website.
