A small brooch to remind you of big skies and long sunny days by the sea.Growing up in the Midlands we saw the sea just once a year and even the waveless flat water at Skegness triggered huge excitement. I thought times would have changed but it seems not – Kate Wimbush who grew up in the Midlands not so long ago shares the same fascination and excitement about the Great British seaside in general and beach huts in particular. She’s taken this love with her to Manchester where I don’t recall many beach huts (perhaps some enterprising person could build them along the banks of the Ship Canal?)

Anyway, to remind herself and fellow seaside-lovers of days beside the waves Kate makes these gorgeous brooches in either silver or with an oxidised finish. There is something very appealing about the shape, which in a few simple lines conveys seagulls, blue skies, ice cream and sand between the toes. The row of beach huts measures 3cms and is available from the store or from Not On The High Street.

Kate doesn’t just focus on beach huts. She has a large gallery of work on her website: she creates using silver with the colour coming from resin, semi-precious stones and Swarovski crystals. Some pieces show a seaside influence, but her latest collection is based on birds and she’s happy to make whatever anyone wants.
