Most unusual chunky jewellery so far
How do you choose to remember a loved one or pet who’s no longer alive? When I first heard of cremation jewellery I was fascinated and appalled at the same time. Then I went back to a wood where a couple of years ago I’d scattered a friend’s ashes and it was so good to be reminded of times together that it made me think – wouldn’t jewellery do the same thing – just be a constant reminder of someone you loved?
The problem is that a lot of the so-called “urn jewellery” is frankly not good: small funnels into which you spoon the ashes. Then I discovered two companies, one here in the UK and one in the States, who rather than supplying containers are actually incorporating ashes into the piece of jewellery.
The UK company Ashes into Glass create jewellery from layers of molten glass, the ashes, then coloured crystals.
That means the jewellery can be in one of five colours. The earrings shown here cost £195 in silver and £245 in gold, with various arrangements in place to make payment easier.
Besides earrings, there are round and long pendants, a signet ring or paperweights.
The prices for the jewellery from the American company are a lot lower but remember you may have to pay import duty. (Is it tasteless to be concerned about the cost for this kind of jewellery??)
I really like this – it’s called a Spiral Galaxy pendant and it comes from Psyche Cremation Glass, a lampwork glass artist called Mark Hamilton in Oregon. The ashes are encased in the hot molten glass and sealed in the pendant.
The reason Mark gives for the jewellery being so different from anything else in the field is that the “cremains” become part of the art – they form different designs which can be clearly seen through the glass. As the ashes are absorbed they create hundreds of tiny CO2 bubbles and the light plays on these so no two pendants will ever be exactly the same.
The price of the one shown is $77.95, which is about £49.
If you’ve owned a piece of this kind of jewellery, I’d love to hear from you.
